ORONO — In its first game under new coach Richard Barron, the University of Maine wo-men’s basketball team posted a 78-62 victory over New Brunswick in an exhibition contest Sunday afternoon.

Barron replaced former Lawrence High School and UMaine star Cindy Blodgett, who was fired after compiling a 24-94 record over four years.

Ashleigh Roberts and Corinne Wellington led the Black Bears with 13 points apiece. Shareka Maner added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Courtney Anderson (Leavitt High) and Rebecca Knight (McAuley) each had five points. Knight played 19 minutes and Anderson was on the floor for 16

Women’s soccer

Husson 3, UMF 0: Lawrence High School graduate Jess Poulin had three saves and a shutout as the third-ranked Eagles blanked No. 6 UMF in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal in Bangor.

Alexandra Laniewski had two goals and Emily Zurcher scored once for the Eagles, who will play at No. 2 Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday. Beth Lebel made six saves and Skowhegan grad Crystal Johnson had three stops for the Beavers (5-10-3).

The men’s soccer quarterfinal between No. 3 UMF and No. 6 New England College was postponed by snow and rescheduled to 2 p.m., today at Prescott Field.

Cross country

UMF men, women each finish fifth: UMF junior Salena Sykes won the individual women’s NAC championship at Lyndon, Vt. The Beavers, who had won the last four NAC team titles, placed fifth as Husson took first place. Sykes posted a winning time of 22 minutes, 21.0 seconds.

New England College won the men’s team title, with UMF placing fifth. Mt. View grad Jackson Fortin was UMF’s top finisher, with a time of 32:55.1 on the 8-kilometer course for 20th place.

Also this weekend: Mt. Blue grad Michelle Oswald had two assists in the University of New England’s 7-1 field hockey victory over Salve Regina on Saturday. The first assist gave Oswald 23 for her career to set a school record, and the win was the 17th of the season for UNE, also a new school mark. Winthrop grad Bree Tupper also scored a goal for UNE.
