FARMINGTON — Luiz Ristow scored the only goal of the game as the University of Maine at Farmington men’s soccer team beat New England College 1-0 in a North Atlantic Conference men’s soccer quarterfinal game Monday at Prescott Field.

No. 3 UMF improves to 9-7-0 and advances to play No. 2 Castleton State College in the semifinals. No. 6 New England ends the season 7-9-3.

After 55 scoreless minutes, Ristow headed in a corner kick by Waterville Senior High School graduate Sean Raph to lift UMF to the win. UMF did not allow a shot in the final 23 minutes of the game to preserve the win.

In the first half, the Pilgrims peppered UMF goalie Derek Reilly, outshooting the Beavers 13-4. Reilly made a pair of diving stops and got help when a shot by Nick Caldwell hit the post to keep the game scoreless.

Raph nearly padded the lead when his shot was mishandled and hit the post in the 73rd minute.

Reilly finished with five saves for UMF. New England College goalie Robert Millard had seven saves.
