SOUTH CHINA — Two hundred Chinese lanterns — which look like small, lit hot-air balloons — will be released at 4 p.m. Sunday at Erskine Academy in memory of 17-year-old Amanda Edwards, a student who died in a crash three years ago, and to raise money for Project Graduation.
The sale has been organized by Edwards’ family members. “We want everybody to graduate this year safe and healthy,” said her mother, Rebecca Renaud. Renaud, of Vassalboro, said the biodegradable lanterns will be sold for $5 apiece beginning at 3 p.m. in the school parking lot.
Edwards would have graduated in 2009.
Recently Erskine students raised $7,000 for breast cancer research in Edwards’ name.
“It’s great to see year after year that kids are staying involved … ,” Renaud said Thursday.
