Good news: The Supreme Court has declared corporations are to be treated like citizens. Their political spending is protected as “free speech.”
Bad news: They don’t have to pay taxes like the normal people do.
It sort of turns the founding fathers’ ideal upside down, though. Think about it. The GOP-controlled Supreme Court has granted corporations “representation without taxation.”
While we contemplate the Arab Spring and wonder aloud if Islam can be compatible with democracy, perhaps we should stop and wonder how we can make sure that our democracy can survive global capitalism.
