BUCKSPORT– A 230-year-old historic hotel in Bucksport that has hosted presidents and other famous figures could reopen as an assisted living facility.
The Jed Prouty Inn that has been unused for nearly a decade has been sold to a Calais couple who already operate five senior living facilities in Maine.
The sale price was not disclosed.
John and Rhonda Chambers have been talking with Bucksport officials for some time about establishing a facility in town.
John Chambers tells the Bangor Daily News that if everything goes smoothly both with the sale and licensing, they could begin taking in clients for some of the 16 units planned for the facility as early as February.
He says while the exterior of the building will require extensive work, the inside is in good shape.
Portland police get new shotguns
PORTLAND — The Portland Police Department has a new weapon in the fight against crime.
The department has purchased 10 Benelli M4 12-gauge shotguns, a top of the line weapon that has become the standard for the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The weapons cost $1,400 each, $1,800 with add-ons the department requested and were paid for with a federal grant.
Lt. Gary Hutcheson, the department’s firearms instructor, tells the Portland Press Herald that the shotguns are user-friendly and durable and require a low level of maintenance.
Acting Chief Michael Sauschuck says the guns are more effective for a wider range of officers.
With a collapsible stock and a shortened barrel, the new shotgun is easier to wield in tighter spaces than other long guns.
