ANSON — An Anson man was arrested early Wednesday after he allegedly fired his shotgun, while intoxicated, in a residential area.
Police say Eric Spooner was involved in a domestic dispute before he shot the weapon while standing less than 30 feet from his neighbors’ homes.
No one was injured, but Spooner faces a single charge of discharging a firearm near a dwelling.
Officer Don Avery, with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, was en route to a report of a domestic disturbance involving Spooner on Randall Street at 12:27 a.m. when the report about the gunshot came in.
The caller said Spooner had gone outside and fired a round into the air with his shotgun, according to an arrest affidavit filed at Somerset County District Court.
Spooner later told Avery he had gotten in an argument with a woman. The woman then called a male family member, who Spooner started to wrestle with.
When the family member left, “Eric stated he went outside and fired off his shotgun in the air, due to skunks getting into his trash. I explained to Eric that he could not fire his gun in town,” Avery wrote.
The woman told Avery she had not wanted to be around Spooner because he was intoxicated. She said after he fired the gun she took it away from him, according to documents.
On Wednesday afternoon, Judge Peter Darvin set Spooner’s bail at $1,000 cash. His trial date was set for Jan. 18 at Somerset County District Court.
