WATERVILLE — Cony High School graduate Julie Veilleux won her first game as a head coach as the Colby women’s basketball team beat Clark University 79-57 on Saturday night on the first day of the Brandeis Tournament.
Jil Vaughan finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Cony graduate Rachael Mack had 20 points and nine rebounds for Colby. Aarika Ritchie finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Fort Kent 49, UMaine-Farmington 48: Ericka Christensen scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Bengals (1-3) to thier first win of the season, at the Dunkin’ Donuts Tip-Off Tournament in Farmington.
The Bengals took a 49-48 lead with 2:36 left to play on a basket by Taylor Boucher (13 points). Emma Morrison led UMF with 15 points.
USM 85, UMaine-Presque Isle 44: Courtney Cochran scored 21 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine past the University of Maine at Presque Isle at the Dunkin’ Donuts Tip-Off Tournament.
Nicole Garland added 19 points for USM, while Abby Hasson scored 10.
Bryant 65, Maine 53: Naana Ankoma-Mensa scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs to the win in Maine’s home opener.
Danielle Douglas and Courtney Schissler each added 17 points for Bryant (2-1) while Ashleigh Roberts paced Maine (1-2) with 10 points.
Springfield 82, Thomas 43: Thomas senior Karin Bird scored 20 points as the Terrier lost in the consolation game of the P&H Travel Tip-Off Tournament in Bridgewater, Mass.
Women’s hockey
Middlebury 6, Colby 0: Katie Sullivam scored three goals to lead the third-ranked Panthers. Annabelle Jones made 22 saves for Middlebury (2-0) while Brianne Wheeler had 30 saves for Colby (0-2).
Maine 0, Brown 0: Maine goalie Kylie Smith made 23 saves while Brown’s Katie Jamison had 31.
Men’s basketball
UMaine-Presque Isle 81, Newbury 68: Aaron Hutchins scored 27 points to lead the University of Maine at Presque Isle to the win at the Charlie Ryan Classic.
Patrick Manifold added 22 points and nine rebounds for UMPI (2-1). Newbury’s Eric Watson also scored 27 points.
Mount Saint Vincent 77, UMaine-Farmington 64: Pet Sumner scored 13 points, while Yusuf Inman and Andrew Dickey both scored 10 in the Beavers loss in the consolation game of the Hampton Inn Classic.
Baruch 74, Colby 63: Chris Beauchamp scored 36 points to lead his team to the win at the New York University Tournament on Saturday.
Eric Beaulieu led Colby (0-1) with 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while teammate Ben Foreman added 12 points.
Tufts 84, Thomas 71: Alex Orchowski scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Tufts in the championship game of the Charlie Ryan Classic in Waterville.
Thomas sophomore Stanley Green Jr. led all scorers with 22 points while teammate Jarrad DeVaughn added 18 points and six assists, and Martin Cleveland added 14 points and nine rebounds. Orchowski was named tournament MVP.
Also Saturday: Winthrop graduate Sam Leclerc scored a game-high 18 points to lead Bentley to a 67-64 win against Bridgeport . . . Hall-Dale graduate Wade Davis finished 57th overall to help Williams College to a fifth-place finish at the National Div. III cross country championship.
