WATERVILLE — A baby who was injured in an assault Nov. 13 is doing well, her mother said Wednesday.

Brittney Young, 21, said her daughter, four-month-old Chloe Phillips, was hospitalized with a skull fracture at Maine Medical Center in Portland and released three days later on Nov. 16. The baby did not suffer two skull fractures, soft tissue or brain trauma, as previously reported, she said.

Young said she was asleep at the time of the injury, but has since heard an account of the incident from the father Robert Phillips, 37, who was charged with one count of aggravated assault.

Young said the child was crying while lying on her side in a cushioned chair about 5:30 a.m. and Robert Phillips wanted the her to stop crying.

“He pushed down on (the baby’s) right side with force,” Young said. There was a wood board beneath the cushion.

“That’s what hit her head and made the injury,” she said. “I’m not making excuses for him. He pushed hard enough to reach that point, obviously.”

“It wasn’t ‘I’m going to try to kill you.’ It was ‘You need to stop crying, I’m going crazy,'” Young said.

Young said she woke up an hour later to the sound of the baby crying and noticed her head was swollen. She then took Chloe to Inland Hospital and later that afternoon the baby was transferred to Maine Medical Center.

Robert Phillips was arrested the next day. He remains in Kennebec County Correctional Facility on $20,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear Jan. 31 in Kennebec County Superior Court.
