Lawrence High School running back Shaun Carroll, Jr. and Mt. Blue running back Izaiha Tracy are among the 12 semifinalists for the James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy. The award is annually given to the senior voted the top high school football player in Maine.

“I’m really surprised, and I have to say I’m pretty excited about it,” Tracy said.

Three finalists will be announced on Dec. 18, and the Fitzpatrick Trophy will be awarded at a banquet on Jan. 15 at the Holiday Inn By The Bay in Portland.

Despite a groin injury suffered near midseason, Carroll ran for 1,605 yards and 19 touchdowns, helping Lawrence win the Pine Tree Conference Class A division and finish the season 11-1, falling in the Class A state game to Cheverus.

“I feel blessed to be in this position right now,” said Carroll, who learned he was a semifinalist when he received a letter at school. “It shows hard work pays off.”

Carroll led the PTC, averaging 26.2 yards per punt return. He returned one for a touchdown.

“Shaun is a pretty great kid to coach,” Lawrence coach John Hersom said. “Overall, I think he prepared himself well for what was a pretty exciting season for him.”

Tracy scored 17 touchdowns to help lead Mt. Blue to a 9-2 record and the PTC B championship game. Tracy played a utility role in the Cougars’ offense this season, running for six touchdowns and catching six more. He also returned four punts for a touchdown and one kickoff for a score.

As a defensive back, Tracy had 54 tackles.

“He had an unbelievable year,” Mt. Blue coach Gary Parlin said of Tracy. “He was equally good as a wide receiver, a runner, defense, returning kicks… Someone said, what’s his best position? I don’t know.”

Added Tracy: “I’d almost have to agree. I like running back, but I’ll play wherever they put me.”

Joining Carroll and Tracy as semifinalists are: Samuel Chaves, Massabesic; Donald Clark, Cape Elizabeth; Spencer Cooke, Cheverus; John Doyon, Hampden; Jordan Hersom, Leavitt; Luke Libby, Thornton; Logan Mars, Scarborough; Dominic Mowrer, Orono; Graham Strondak, Westbrook and Louis DiTomasso, Wells.
