AUGUSTA — An Augusta couple arrested in connection with a burglary last month are responsible for breaking into more than two dozen homes throughout central Maine, police said Friday.

John W. Grotton, 25, and his girlfriend, Emily Allen-Perry, 22, were arrested Nov. 17 by police investigating a burglary complaint in Readfield. Both were charged with burglary and criminal intent.

Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department said Friday that the couple has since confessed to burglaries across the region. The couple allegedly stole items such as electronics and firearms during the burglaries.

“To date, 31 burglaries have been solved,” Davies said.

Police did not immediately identify all of the communities where the burglaries took place.

Grotton has been held without bail at the Kennebec County jail in Augusta since his arrest. He was charged Thursday by the Waterville Police Department with burglary, theft and violating conditions of release.

Allen-Perry remains free on bail pending additional charges related to the ongoing investigation, Davies said.

Kennebec County and Winthrop Police launched a joint investigation after Winthrop officer Ken Tabor uncovered evidence that led investigators to Grotton, Davies said. Police subsequently searched Grotton’s Augusta home.

“With the magnitude of the investigation and the likelihood of burglaries having occurred in other jurisdictions, assistance was requested from the Augusta Police Department and Maine State Police,” Davies said.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department joined the investigation after police determined the couple’s crime spree had spread into that county as well, Davies said.

Grotton and Allen-Perry confessed to the burglaries, Davies said.

“Both parties have been cooperative and have shown authorities the locations of the crimes they committed in and around Kennebec County,” Davies said.

Police will contact victims to meet with investigators to identify missing items, Davies said.
