MONMOUTH — A Litchfield man was recovering at a hospital Monday after spending several hours trapped inside his pickup truck following a weekend crash on Route 135.

Justin D. Combs, 20, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, said Monmouth police Chief Kevin Mulherin. Combs was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The crash occurred sometime early Saturday morning as Combs was driving his Ford Ranger pickup north on Route 135. Combs lost control of the truck near Gray Mill Road and swerved off the road and hit a large tree, Mulherin said.

Combs remained trapped inside the truck for what Mulherin thought was several hours until his vehicle was spotted and the accident was reported around 6:20 a.m.

Mulherin had not spoken to Combs and was unsure what caused him to lose control of his truck. Speed appears to have been a factor, Mulherin said.

Charges are pending against Combs, Mulherin said. The truck was destroyed in the crash.
