SKOWHEGAN — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer a master gardener program. The program will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, beginning Jan. 23, at the Somerset County Extension office, Norridgewock Avenue.

The fee is determined by household income. Scholarships are available and reference materials are included.

Participants will receive 15 three-hour training sessions on gardening. After completion of the training program, participants will volunteer 40 hours to a community gardening project, participating in things such as planting and maintaining a vegetable variety trial, designing and creating a mobile display to be used at fairs and other public functions or answering public calls and requests for gardening information. The program will focus on fruit and vegetables.

Applications are due Monday, Jan. 2. For those with a disability who need accommodations to participate, call Tom Goodspeed at the Somerset County Extension Office at 800-287-1495.
