MONMOUTH — Monmouth used a third-quarter run to gain the advantage and went on to defeat Lisbon 40-38 in a Mountain Valley Conference girls basketball game Friday night.

Brianna Hicks led the balanced Mustangs (1-0) with 11 points while Kristine Kahl added seven and Colby Wilson and Melissa Brassard each had six.

Lisbon (0-1) was led by Jessica Campbell and Bailey Moore with 12 points apiece.

Gardiner 58, Oak Hill 35: Junior guard Kylee Granholm totaled 14 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and six assists to lead the Tigers to a home KVAC B win.

Katie McAllister added 12 points for Gardiner (1-0), which broke open a five-point game at halftime by outscoring Oak Hill (0-1) 18-2 during the third quarter.

Darby Beaulieu led the Raiders with eight points.

Messalonskee 68, Erskine 51: Mary Badeen had 19 points as Messalonskee won its season-opener, in South China.

Megan Pelletier added 15 points for Messalonskee (1-0), which jumped out to a 22-5 lead and made 11 3-pointers.

Amy Phillips had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Erskine (0-1), while Bridget Humphrey added seven points and 10 rebounds.

Hall-Dale 63, Winthrop 19: Carylanne Wolfington scored a career-high 38 points as the Bulldogs overpowered the Ramblers in Winthrop.

Wolfington did not play in the fourth quarter. She had 34 of her points in the first and third quarters combined.

Hall-Dale (1-0) led 26-0 after one quarter. Kristina Buck added 10 points for the Bulldogs, who won the Class C state title last season.

Winthrop is 0-1.

Boys

Hall-Dale 69, Winthrop 35: Mike Woods was one of four players to score in double figures for the Bulldogs in their season opening Mountain Valley Conference win in Winthrop.

Woods scored 13 points, while Zac Plummer had 11, Harry Cheung 10 and Tyler French 10 for Hall-Dale (1-0).

Tyler Foster had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Taylor Morang had 13 points, three assists and three steals for Winthrop (0-1).

Brunswick 58, Cony 39: The Dragons outscored the Rams 37-16 in the second half on their way to a season-opening KVAC A win in Brunswick.

Ryan Black had 16 points for Brunswick (1-0), while Mitchell Black added 15.

Walker Cooper scored 18 points for Cony (0-1).

Leavitt 65, Maranacook 62 (OT): Jordan Hersom scored 18 points and Andrew Middleton added 15 to lead the visiting Hornets in a Class B game that was decided in overtime.  

Tim Dow scored nine points to lead Leavitt (1-0) as well.

Kyle Boucher scored 16 points and had seven blocks for the Black Bears (1-0). Taylor Wilbur scored 14 points and Seth Miller added 13 as well.

Erskine 68, Messalonskee 51: Shyler Scates scored 25 points as Erskine pulled away to beat Messalonskee in the season-opener for both teams in South China.

Devin Duncan added 12 points and Tom Grady had 10 for Erskine (1-0).

Riley Wentworth had 12 points, including four 3-pointers in the first half for Messalonskee (0-1). Elijah Steele added 10 points.
