MOUNT VERNON — Mitchell Riley of Mount Vernon was recently promoted to first lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers.

Riley graduated from Maranacook Community High School in 2005 and from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2009 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is currently a platoon leader with the 95th Route Clearance Company which is deployed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Riley is the son of Dorcas Riley of Mount Vernon and Douglas Riley of Readfield and the grandson of Marie Benner of Waterville.

MONMOUTH — Scott Lewis of Monmouth was recently promoted to the rank of major in the Maine Army National Guard for superior performance as the director of the Maine State Partnership Program with Montenegro.

Lewis served in various leadership positions in the 133rd Engineer Battalion, 240th Engineer Group and Joint Force Headquarters, Maine Army National Guard. Lewis deployed with the 133rd Engineer Battalion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-05 as the executive officer for Bravo Company, 133rd Engineer Battalion. The unit received the Meritorious Unit Commendation from the Department of Defense. He also commanded the 262nd Engineer Company, Maine Army National Guard.

Lewis graduated from Lake Region High School and received a degree from the University of Southern Maine. Lewis lives in Monmouth with his wife Lynn and two children, Kimberlee and Nathan.

WEST GARDINER — Joshua Cochrane, formerly of Bowdoinham, son of Dana and Kathryne Cochrane of West Gardener, was recently promoted from machinist mate third class petty officer to machinist mate second class.

Cochrane joined the Navy in 2008. He is stationed at the King’s Bay Submarine Base in Georgia, where he lives with his wife and their four children.

SAN ANTONIO — Air National Guard Airman Heather M. Singleton recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Singleton is the daughter of Janie Vafiadis of Cranston, R.I., and Stephen Singleton of Winthrop, Maine. She is a 2006 graduate of Warwick Adult Education in Rhode Island.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Army National Guard Private Thomas C. Merrill recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

Merrill graduated in 2002 from Gardiner Area High School, Gardiner, Maine. He earned an associate degree in 2007 from Northern Maine Community College, Presque Isle. He is the son of Thomas Merrill and Bonnie Merrill, both of South Gardiner, Maine.
