WINSLOW — The Winslow High School outdoor track and field team didn’t host any meets last spring, and the Black Raiders won’t host any in 2012, either.

If a plan to resurface the aging track goes through, however, Winslow could be hosting meets on a brand-new track in 2013.

“The best-case scenario is, we start digging in the fall,” said Dennis Dacus, director of Winslow’s Parks and Recreation Department. “The whole thing will be new, a total renovation.”

The track was built in 1985 and resurfaced in 1996, Dacus said. The rubberized coating of the six-lane track has worn away in some spots, Winslow High School athletic director Carrie Larrabee said, and in other spots, the track is cracked.

Currently, the high school, junior high school and summer track and field teams are able to practice on the track, which surrounds the Winslow High School field hockey field, on a limited basis.

“It’s in very poor condition right now,” Larrabee said.

Dacus said the cost to refurbish the track is anywhere between $150,000 and $175,000. Dacus recently applied for a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant, which would pay for $75,000 of the project.

The track will remain six lanes, which means while Winslow will be able to host regular season meets, it will not be able to host conference or state championships, which require eight lanes.

“To go to eight lanes would triple the cost of the project,” Dacus said.

The remaining cost of the project will come through fundraising, Dacus said. A committee met Dec. 6 and will meet again at 6 p.m. on Jan. 5 in the Winslow High School library to discuss possible fundraisers.

“At the meeting on Jan. 5, we’ll find a chairman and really start working on fundraising opportunities,” Larrabee said.

Donations for the project can be sent to Winslow High School, in care of Larrabee, 20 Danielson Street, Winslow, Maine, 04901.
