CARRABASSETT VALLEY — One year after a ski-lift cable derailed and caused a major accident, Sugarloaf unveiled its new $3 million Skyline Quad at noon on Saturday.

More than 100 people lined up Saturday morning to be among the first skiers to ride the new lift.

A group of Freeport teenagers awoke at 4:30 a.m. to be the first in line. John Nappi, 13, Maria Nappi, 15, and Mary Noyes, 15, took the first ride up.

The new chairlift replaces a pair of 35-year-old, double-passenger chairlifts known as Spillway East and Spillway West.

When the cable derailed on Spillway East last December, several chairs crashed to the ground, and six people were injured.
