HIGHGATE, Vt. — Holiday travelers heading across the U.S.-Canadian border to or from northern New England and New York are being urged to plan ahead to help ensure things go smoothly at a busy time of year.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say the busiest times for border crossings are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so travelers who don’t want long waits may want to plan around those.

Travelers are urged to have their passports or other travel documents ready as they approach the border to speed processing. Those who need a refresher on the border-crossing process are urged to check the “Know Before You Go” section of the agency’s website, which is at www.cbp.gov .

The website is updated hourly with estimated wait times at various border crossings.
