FREEMAN TOWNSHIP — A 20-year-old Wilton woman was killed in a car crash Sunday night in Freeman Township.

Rebecca Maiuri died at the scene on Route 145 where her car struck a utility pole just off the roadway, Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Kenneth Charles said.

Maiuri was driving alone and heading south when she lost control of the 2000 Buick sedan near the intersection of Baker Hill Road. The sedan veered across the centerline and went off the road, shearing the utility pole and taking down power lines, Charles said.

Excessive speed probably caused Maiuri to lose control on a curve in the road, which is at the bottom of a hill and in a 45-mph zone, Charles said. It appears Maiuri was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which a passer-by reported at 10:30 p.m., he said.

A crash reconstruction will determine the speed of the car before the crash, and it will take several weeks before the report is finished, Charles said. He said he does not suspect any factors other than speed played a role in causing the crash.

Maiuri’s family was notified of her death Sunday night, Charles said.

She leaves behind a 16-month-old son with the boy’s father, Austin Keith, according to David Keith, the boy’s grandfather.

David Keith said Monday afternoon that Maiuri has several family members living in central Maine who could not be reached.

“It was a tragic accident,” he said.

Emergency responders from the towns of Strong and Kingfield responded to the crash, which happened north of Strong. That section of Route 145 was closed for more than an hour during the investigation, and surrounding communities lost power temporarily, Charles said.
