FARMINGTON — A 33-year-old man is accused of punching a police officer in the face when she tried to get him to stop dancing in the middle of the street Sunday night, police said.

Simon Blodgett, of Farmington, faces multiple charges stemming from his arrest after the confrontation with police around 10 p.m. on Main Street, according to Rachel Heseltine, a Farmington police spokeswoman.

Police received a complaint that a man was dancing in the road and blocking traffic in front of the Rite-Aid convenience store. Farmington police Officer Courtney Krause responded and found Blodgett standing in the street, showing signs of being intoxicated with alcohol, Heseltine said, citing the incident report by Krause.

Blodgett refused to leave the road when asked, Krause grabbed his arm to remove him, and he punched her in the face, the report states. They both fell to the ground and scuffled briefly before three other law enforcement officers arrived and assisted Krause in restraining Blodgett, Heseltine said.

Blodgett was taken by police to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, where he was treated for a bloody nose and cuts on his chin, then released to police custody, Heseltine said.

“Officer Krause is OK but has a lot of bruising on her face,” Heseltine said Monday.

Blodgett was charged with assault on an officer and failure to submit to arrest. He was released Monday from Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington after posting a $3,000 unsecured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 23, a jail official said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the University of Maine at Farmington campus police assisted Krause at the scene.
