FARMINGTON — A 28-year-old man is accused of crashing a stolen car into a cluster of trees and fleeing the scene Monday night in Farmington, police said.

The man, Christian Trefethen, of Farmington, faces multiple charges stemming from an investigation into the theft and crash, which occurred on Route 43, Farmington police Officer Ted Neil said Tuesday afternoon.

Police discovered an abandoned 2000 Kia Sephia that had crashed into the trees lining Route 43 around 7 p.m. Residents who live nearby told police they noticed someone fleeing the area shortly after the crash, which caused significant damage to the car, according to Bonnie Pomeroy, a Farmington police spokeswoman.

Trefethen turned himself into the Farmington police station Tuesday around noon, and he was arrested in connection with the crash after being questioned by police, Neil said.

Trefethen was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage crash, operating after suspension and a probation violation, Neil said.

The car Trefethen is accused of crashing had been reported stolen from a Weld residence earlier Monday, according to Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox.
