Many schools are closed in New Hampshire and Maine and multiple accidents have been reported in southern Vermont as much of northern New England picked up its first significant snowfall this winter.

Meteorologist James Brown from the National Weather Service says snowfall that started before daybreak Thursday should add up to 5 to 9 inches of snow in interior Maine and New Hampshire.

Coastal Maine and the westward side of the storm in Vermont should see 3 to 6 inches of snow.
In New Hampshire, the House speaker canceled committee hearings.

The Maine Turnpike Authority says speed limits on the highway from Kittery to Gray have been reduced to 45 miles per hour.
