JEFFERSON — Police charged a local woman was with driving with a suspended license Saturday after she crashed her Cadillac on Washington Road.

Regina Stewart, 25, of Jefferson, was issued a summons charging her with operating after suspension.

Stewart was driving her 2003 Cadillac CTS east on Washington Road when it skidded out of control at the Village Street intersection, according a release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The Cadillac crossed the center line and went off the road, striking a tree and causing significant passenger-side damage. The Cadillac came to a stop in the middle of the road.

Police said the crash was caused by excessive speed.

5:58 p.m., a vehicle being driven by William Kunitz, 65, struck a fire hydrant at the intersection of Main Street and Route 24. The vehicle slid across the intersection and into the hydrant, breaking it off. The car continued onto an embankment at the town’s waterfront park. Kunitz was not injured.
