CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Chest trauma caused the death of a 41-year-old man who skied into a tree last week at Sugarloaf ski resort, the state medical examiner said Thursday.

David Morse, of Harmony, Nova Scotia, died shortly after 5 p.m. in an ambulance en route to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, police said. Morse was visiting the resort with his wife and two children.

Franklin Memorial Hospital began an internal review Monday into an allegation about the medical treatment an ambulance crew gave to Morse, according to an email statement released Monday by the hospital. Administrators at the hospital, which owns the ambulance service, have not returned calls or email this week seeking comment on the review.

Jill Gray, community relations manager for Franklin Memorial Hospital, said Thursday that the hospital expects to release a statement about the internal review today.
