WILTON — Two people were killed in a crash Monday afternoon on U.S. Route 2 in Wilton, police said.

Meta Sevigny, 80, of New Vineyard, and a male whose name was withheld pending notification of his relatives both died at the scene of the crash, which involved three vehicles and occurred just before 4 p.m., police Chief Heidi Wilcox said.

Sevigny was a passenger in a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck being driven by David Miller, 44, of Wilton, who was injured and taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Wilcox said.

The man who died was driving a 2004 sedan. A 2000 Saturn sedan also was involved in the crash and was being driven by Thomas Lake, 50, of Jay, who was not hurt, Wilcox said.

Wilcox said the road was icy at the time, but he gave no other details Monday night.

The crash happened near the entrance to the Comfort Inn in Wilton, just southwest of and across the town line from Franklin Memorial Hospital.

About 40 minutes after the crash, there was a slight drizzle and the road was slick from a coating of a mixture of ice and slushy snow. A red tarp covered the pickup truck and floodlights from two nearby firetrucks illuminated the road.

The crash is being investigated by Sgt. Richard Billian of the Wilton Police Department, with accident reconstruction and forensic mapping of the scene conducted by Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Wilcox said.

The section of highway was temporarily closed to traffic, with police and fire units stationed at the hospital entrance. Traffic on U.S. Route 2 heading southwest from Farmington toward Wilton was detoured onto Route 133. The road reopened some time after 6 p.m.

Fire departments from Wilton and Farmington assisted at the scene.
