How do we protect our children when the police won’t?

I know a woman that has five children. Her ex-husband went over to visit the kids and when he got there he started picking on his five-year-old daughter. When that didn’t work he went after his 13-year-old son. The father hit the boy in the face and it knocked him into a wall and now he has a bruise on his face.

The police were called. They said there was no crime committed, that the father has a right to discipline his kids.

When is it a crime when the kid ends up in the hospital or dead? It’s not fair for the children. They need to be protected. And if the police won’t help protect them, then who will?
