LUBEC — The Coast Guard is holding a pair of meetings this week to hear from mariners about a tidal energy proposal in Cobscook Bay at Maine’s eastern tip.

Ocean Renewable Power Co. has proposed using five turbine generator units for its Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project. A permit for the pilot project is pending with federal regulators.

The Coast Guard’s hearings are planned for today in Lubec and Tuesday in Eastport. Both communities are near the proposed site between Goose Island and Seward Neck.

The Coast Guard wants to hear from draggers, trawlers and others whose activities could cause underwater entanglements. The Coast Guard may propose regulatory action to prohibit or restrict certain operations, or implement special routes through the area.
