AUGUSTA  — The Maine House Democratic leader is asking Republican Rep. David R. Burns of Alfred to resign in the wake of findings that he misused public campaign funds.

Rep. Emily Ann Cain of Orono today called for Burns’ immediate resignation, or for the Maine House Ethics Committee to be convened to recommend action.

The state ethics commission, Maine’s campaign finance oversight board, in November found that Burns falsified campaign spending reports and used money from the taxpayer financed Clean Election fund for personal purposes. The commission referred the case to the attorney general.

Burns today referred questions to his attorney, William Logan, who did not immediately return a phone call.
