BANGOR — A Maine man and a Canadian woman have been charged with trying to smuggle hundreds of methamphetamine pills into the U.S. by hiding them in secret door panels in their car.

Authorities say 20-year-old Caleb Jewett of Mars Hill and 24-year-old and Patricia Smith of Perth Andover, New Brunswick were arrested last week at the Bridgewater Port of Entry, north of Houlton.

They are being held without bail pending detention hearings expected to be held next week.

With the help of a drug-sniffing dog, 786 methamphetamine pills were found hidden in the rear doors.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Smith and Jewett are charged with importation of 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

It was not clear if they had hired lawyers.
