OAKLAND — Police encouraged residents to lock their cars and trucks after five motor vehicles were burglarized overnight Monday.

Oakland police Capt. Rick Stubbert said items totaling more than $2,000 were reported stolen Tuesday from parked vehicles in driveways on Oak Hill Drive, Mary Lane and Hussey Hill Road.

The captain said all of the vehicles were unlocked and within walking distance of each other.

A variety of items, including electronics and change, were reported taken.

“Drug use is the No. 1 driving force behind property crimes,” Stubbert said.

The first calls to police came in around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and the last about 7:45 that night.

Stubbert said the extended reporting time frame wasn’t unusual, as people may not use their vehicles for a day or so and may not notice initially that small items are missing.

Stubbert said people with information about the burglaries may contact the department at 465-2202 or oaklandcrimetip.com.
