Dog in Colby skier biting had vaccination

WATERVILLE — A dog that bit a Colby College student on the leg has been identified and is up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations, according to Animal Control Officer Christopher Martinez.

Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey reported Wednesday that a student cross-country skiing at Colby Feb. 9 had been bitten by a black Labrador retriever being walked, off the leash, by a woman and was undergoing a series of rabies shots. Rumsey asked anyone with information about the case to call police.

Martinez said Sunday that after a story appeared Thursday in the Morning Sentinel about the incident, a Waterville woman came forward and said she was watching the dog for a friend and had been walking it at Colby Feb. 9 when the dog approached the skier. The woman was unaware the dog had bitten the student, according to Martinez.

Martinez said the dog is actually good-natured and grabbed the leg of the skier in an effort to play, not to hurt her.

“I told her she could stop taking (the rabies shots),” he said. “I assume that she did.”
