AUGUSTA — Rep. Mark Dion, D-Portland, will ask House colleagues this week to support an order asking the state supreme court to weigh in on controversies surrounding Treasurer Bruce Poliquin.

In recent weeks, Dion and others have questioned whether Poliquin violated the state Constitution by continuing to conduct private business while holding public office.

Attorney General William Schneider recently issued guidance to Poliquin that indicated he must “disassociate” himself from his private businesses. But Dion said he believes that Poliquin has already violated the Constitution and should be held accountable.

“You can’t break the law and just walk away from it,” Dion said.

Poliquin did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

The House is expected to consider the proposed order this week.
