BELFAST — An initial court appearance is set for the 24-year-old Maine man charged in the slaying of a Florida firefighter in what police are calling a drug-related case.

Daniel Porter is to make his initial appearance Friday morning in Waldo County Superior Court in Belfast to face a murder charge.

Porter, who had been staying at a house in Jackson, is charged with killing 31-year-old Jerry Perdomo of Orange City, Fla. Perdomo disappeared in Maine Feb. 16 and his body was recovered Wednesday in the woods of Newburgh.

As autopsy that could determine the cause of Perdomo’s death is expected to begin Friday at the earliest.

Perdomo was a Seminole County, Fla., firefighter and emergency medical technician and married father of two.
