AUGUSTA — After two months of mostly mild and dry weather, the first day of March brought a chilling reminder to central Maine: winter’s not over yet.
Thursday’s day-long snowstorm dumped several inches of snow across the region, forcing schools and some businesses to close for the day. Most state offices closed by 1 p.m.

Nearly 5 inches of snow had fallen in Randolph by early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Gray, and some areas were expected to receive 8 to 12 inches by day’s end.
There were few major accidents reported in Augusta during the storm and most calls involved vehicles getting stuck in the snow, according to Lt. Christopher Read. But police were still busy: officers assisted in locating the owners of vehicles parked on city streets, so public works crews could plow them.
The city of Augusta announced a parking ban on city streets until 7 a.m. today.
