PORTLAND — Jon Amabile scored 27 points and Thiwat Thiwat added 15 to lead Deering to the Class A state basketball title with a 59-50 win over Hampden Academy on Saturday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

It was Deering’s second boys championship in school history. The Rams, leading by a point at halftime, outscored the Broncos, 21-11, in the third quarter to take charge. Both Amabile and Thiwat had eight points each in the pivotal third quarter. Deering (19-3) made 9 for 15 shots in the third quarter while Hampden (20-2) was only 4-of-13 shooting.

Deering’s quickness, in the form of its fullcourt press, caused havoc with the taller Broncos and took them out of their offense.

Deering’s first state title came in 2006, also over Hampden here at the Civic Center. The Broncos beat the Rams in 2005 in the state final at the Bangor Auditorium.
