FAIRFIELD — Democrat Karen Kusiak, 59, has announced her candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives District 84 seat representing Fairfield, Rome and Smithfield.

Kusiak, of Shawmut, cited her experience on the Fairfield-based Regional School Unit 49 board since the mid-1990s as a qualification for the seat, according to a news release.

She is an assistant professor of education at Colby College, where she has worked part time since 1990. She also co-edits the Journal of Maine Education, a publication of a non-profit professional development organization for educators.

She previously worked as a public school teacher and special education administrator.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Colby in 1975; a master’s in education from what is now Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass., in 1983; and a doctorate in education from the University of Maine in 2011.

She said she anticipates running as a publicly funded candidate.
