The Catholic Diocese of Maine has no need to explain “the gift of marriage” (front-page article, March 3) when the clergy show by their behavior what they really think of matrimony.

These men, who elect themselves to tell others what marriage should be, remain single because joining with a partner in holy matrimony would compromise their sanctity. That is, they believe marriage is not holy at all.

According to the disdain of it they exemplify in their own lives, they believe marriage pollutes the body and corrupts the soul and makes men unfit to serve God.

This is hardly an unbiased or even normal position from which to dictate what marriage is and who should be allowed to participate in it.
