NORRIDGEWOCK — Police on Wednesday released the identity of a man who died at his home Tuesday morning about four hours after declining medical attention at the scene of a car crash.

The man, John Mosher, 54, of Smithfield, was checked Tuesday at the accident site on Main Street by ambulance personnel from Redington-Fairview General Hospital and was released at his request, according to Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. Mosher appeared to have cuts on his head and arm but declined to be taken to the hospital, he said.

Mosher was alone in his red 1994 Ford Mustang when he apparently lost control of the car as he left the Cumberland Farms parking lot about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Gottardi said. There was extensive damage to his car after it slammed into a light post on the driver’s side of the vehicle, he said.

Sheriff’s deputies found that Mosher had died after they were called to his home on Village Road for a medical emergency about 6:30 a.m., Gottardi said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was scheduled to conduct an autopsy Wednesday to determine the cause of death. The accident is still under investigation by Cpl. Ritchie Putnam, Gottardi said.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Norridgewock Fire Department.
