I would like to express my appreciation for all of the efforts that went into amending L.D. 1810, the “Takings Bill,” written by an attorney from the legal firm of Pierce Atwood and sponsored by Rep. Andre Cushing, R-Hampden.

This bill, as initially written, likely would have had devastating consequences for the state, both fiscally and environmentally. The amendments drafted by Rep. Brad Moulton, R-York, and Rep. Charlie Priest, D-Brunswick, are outstanding examples of working together in a bipartisan manner to put the best interests of Maine first. I hope that these amendments will be supported strongly by both parties on the floor vote.

I would also like to thank Sen. Tom Saviello, R-Wilton, Rep. Bob Duchesne, D-Hudson, and especially Rep. Dennis Keschl, R-Belgrade, who recognized the serious problems with the initial bill.

Many other individuals and organizations also worked very hard to oppose the original bill and offer much better alternatives. These include many of Maine’s attorneys, the Natural Resources Council of Maine (Pete Didisheim), the League of Conservation Voters and the Maine Municipal Association. I believe that we owe a debt of gratitude to these and many others who stepped forward to put Maine first.
