WINTHROP — An Augusta man was injured Tuesday when a malfunction in his sport utility vehicle sent it hurtling off U.S. Route 202 and into trees.

Nicholas Bonenfant, 24, was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries, said Winthrop Police Capt. Ryan Frost. He was released from the hospital by Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 8 a.m. as Bonenfant was driving his 2004 Cadillac SRX east on U.S. Route 202. A short distance past the Main Street intersection, the Cadillac had a mechanical malfunction that caused Bonenfant to lose control, Frost said. The SUV went off the right side of the road and struck several trees before stopping on its wheels.

Frost said a report did not indicate what kind of problem the vehicle had, but it had “something to do with the front end” where significant damage was sustained.

Traffic in both directions was slowed but continued to flow as rescuers tended to Bonenfant and removed the SUV.
