As the “Old Ice Sage,” who has been keeping the Maranacook Lake ice out records since 1925, I am pleased to report that the ice was officially out of Maranacook Lake (Winthrop and Readfield) at 2 p.m. March 24.
Ice out on Maranacook Lake is when it is navigable from the public boat launch in Winthrop north to the public boat launch in Readfield.
This is the second earliest ice out since 1925. In 2010, ice-out was on March 20. Ice left Maranacook Lake on March 25 in 1981 and 1982 and on March 30 in 1953 and 2006.
This year is only the sixth time in record-keeping that ice out has been in March.
