WINTHROP — Voters on Thursday elected Larry Fitzgerald as their newest town councilor.

Fitzgerald, Judi Stebbins and Gilbert Turcotte all competed to fill the council seat left empty when Jamess Lattin resigned earlier this month.

The vote tallies, according to Town Office staff, were Fitzgerald 115; Stebbins 76, and Turcotte 27.

To keep the seat, Fitzgerald will have to run for election again on the November ballot.

Fitzgerald served several years ago on a committee that studied the town’s public safety facilities and options for replacement. Stebbins served previously on council and lost a bid to return last November by 12 votes.

Turcotte has worked for the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and more recently for the Sabattus Police Department.
