WISCASSETT — A veteran Maine state trooper on trial for alleged sexual contact with a girl under the age of 14 was assaulted in the courtroom today.

The sheriff’s office arrested William Harrison, 39, of Charlestown, Mass., on an assault charge. Harrison is accused of assaulting Gregory Vrooman, 46, of Nobleboro just as the jury was preparing to issue a verdict. Authorities say no weapons were involved.

Harrison was tackled by the sheriff’s department deputies and security officers. The Bangor Daily News reported that Vrooman was taken to the hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

Vrooman was indicted by a grand jury in February of 2011 on four counts each of unlawful sexual touching, unlawful sexual contact and assault and a charge of witness tampering.
