GARDINER — A local man remained behind bars Friday after he was arrested earlier this week by police responding to a report that he had been stabbed.

Daniel Nelson, 30, was arrested Wednesday on a charge that he violated conditions of his probation by consuming intoxicants, said Gardiner Police Officer Daniel Murray. Nelson is being held at the Kennebec County jail on a probation hold.

Nelson has an extensive criminal record, the most recent of which occurred last month when he was charged with burglary and aggravated criminal mischief related to a 5-year-old burglary case in Farmingdale.

Nelson was free on probation until around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, when police and rescue crews were called to his apartment at 241 Highland Ave. Murray said family members called police after learning that Nelson had been attacked around 2 a.m. that morning.

“He had, according to them, received significant stab wounds,” Murray said.

The family members said Nelson was intoxicated, so they decided to wait until he was asleep before calling for help.

Police converged on the building, LifeFlight helicopter was put on stand-by, and officials found Nelson inside his apartment. He had suffered a small stab wound to his stomach and had injuries to his hand and neck as well, Murray said.

Nelson refused medical attention, but his probation officer asked police to arrest Nelson for violating his probation. Nelson was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where he was treated for his injuries and released to police. Nelson has remained jailed since then.

Murray said Nelson did not suffer his injuries in Gardiner, so the investigation was turned over to the Maine State Police. State Police Lt. David Tripp said the investigation into the stabbing, including how and when it occurred, is ongoing and he declined to release additional details.

Nelson was sentenced to four years in prison, with all but four months suspended, and two years of probation, for April 2010 convictions in Kennebec County Superior Court of eluding an officer, operating after suspension, driving to endanger, operating under the influence, criminal speed and theft.

Nelson was issued summonses last month charging him with burglary and aggravated criminal mischief after DNA evidence collected at a Farmingdale burglary scene matched a sample Nelson submitted earlier this year as part of his probation requirement. Police said Nelson didn’t recall the burglary when he interviewed in jail last month.
