Augusta firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at Capitol Computers in downtown Augusta Saturday night and one person was taken to the hospital following the incident, Augusta Fire Battalion Chief Daniel Guimond said today.
Firefighters got a call at 11:43 p.m. and when they arrived, smoke was visible outside the building.
Capitol Computers CEO Thomas Johnson said his wife Karen, an accountant, was inside finishing up tax returns for clients when she smelled smoke and called the fire department. He said an old wooden access door in an alleyway that faces the Colonial Theater was on fire, but firefighters caught it early.
Johnson said firefighters found a man near the fire who was injured. Guimond said the man was taken to the hospital and that further details would be released later by the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
On Sunday, Johnson was running several fans inside the business to get rid of the smoke, but there was little fire damage. He said he believes the fire was set, and that he’s lucky it was caught as early as it was. The business will be open on Monday.
“I’m a lucky, lucky, lucky man,” he said. “It is a grand coincidence my wife was here and smelled smoke. I’m very sure if it had gotten any farther along this place would have gone up. It’s a very scary situation.”
