POULTNEY, Vt. — Winslow graduate Ali Kriegel went 6 for 7 and drove in five runs as Thomas College swept Green Mountain, 12-3 and 11-6, in a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
Thomas scored six runs in the sixth inning of Game 1 to invoke the eight-run mercy rule, then scored six more runs in the first inning of Game 2. Monmouth grad Kristi Hilton was 0 for 1 in Game 2, but walked four times and scored four runs.
Messalonskee grad Lauren Hachey added three hits on the afternoon, and scored five runs.
Sara Pavento earned both wins for Thomas (10-20-1, 7-6-1). Pavento struck out 10 in 13 innings of work.
Chelsea Paul went 4 for 7 with a solo homerun for Green Mountain (1-24, 0-11).
Maine 3, Binghamton 2: The Black Bears completed the weekend three-game sweep by rallying for the win in Orono.
Maine (10-24, 3-5 America East) trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, when EmJ Fogel doubled and scored on a single by Dagmar Ralphs.
In the seventh, Jennifer Eberhardt singled and Hilary Kane reached on an error. Binghamton pitcher Kate Price retired the next two batters, but Jenny MacDowell drove home Eberhardt with a pinch-hit single. After Fogel was intentionally walked to load the bases, Jessica Burk delivered a bloop single to end the game.
Ashley Kelley earned the win for Maine, allowing three hits in seven innings. Binghamton dropped to 15-22 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
Castleton 8-6, UMaine-Farmington 1-0: The Spartans held UMF’s high-powered offense to five hits to earn the doubleheader sweep in Castleton, Vt.
UMF (10-12, 6-6 NAC) entered the day with a team batting average of .321. Castleton pitcher Emily Sweeney held the Beavers to three hits in the first game — doubles by Lilly Barry and Mt. Blue grad Kaitlyn Bartlett, and a single by Michelle Cote. In Game 2, UMF had only two hits off Castleton pitcher Taylor Lively. Both hits were singles by Cony graduate Amy Jones.
Tori Fearon went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs in the second game for Castleton (15-14, 10-1 NAC).
College baseball
Maine 11, Hartford 3: Alex Calbick drove in four runs as the Black Bears remained unbeaten in the America East by defeating the Hawks in Orono.
Ian Leisenheimer added 3 RBIs for Maine (20-14, 7-0). Michael Fransoso, Colin Gay and Justin Leisenheimer each had two hits. DJ Voisine pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his third victory of the season.
Brian Estevez and Trey Stover each had two hits for Hartford (8-25, 1-7).
Colby-Sawyer 3-2, UMaine Farmington 0-0: The Beavers got strong pitching in both games, but couldn’t get over the hump offensively and lost both games in Farmington.
UMF pitcher Casey Ashey allowed three runs on six hits and struck out eight in the opener, but was stuck with the 3-0 loss. PJ Singster did not strike out a batter for Colby-Sawyer (15-18, 8-12 NAC), but walked only one and gave up three hits in the complete-game win.
The Beavers (5-20, 4-11 NAC) had nine hits in Game 2, including two by Lawrence grad Matt Woodbury. The Chargers scored their two runs on a delayed steal of home and a two-out single. UMF loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Colby-Sawyer reliever Greg Doucette struck out the last batter to end the game.
Men’s lacrosse
Johnson St. 8, UMaine-Farmington 6: The Beavers’ second-half rally fell short as they lost in Johnson, Vt.
Johnson St. led 7-0 at halftime on the strength of three goals by Nash Garceau and two by Alex Petti. Tennessee Peters scored twice and added an assist in the second half for UMF (2-8, 1-5 NAC). Kents Hill natives Jon-Michael Roy and Matt Roy each added a goal for the Beavers.
Mt. Blue grad Ben Altmaier played in goal for UMF in the second half and stopped six of seven shots. Zach Jerome made seven saves to earn the win for the Badgers (3-7, 2-6 NAC).
New England College 28, Thomas 1: Nine different players scored at least two goals for the Pilgrims as they overwhelmed the Terriers in Henniker, N.H.
NEC (6-6, 5-0 NAC) outshot Thomas, 76-5. The only goal for the Terriers was scored by Mt. Blue grad Matt Davis in the first quarter.
Adam Shute led NEC with four goals. Jesse Morkeski made 27 saves for Thomas (3-8, 2-3 NAC).
Also Sunday: Erskine graduate Nick Grady hit a two-run homer in the University of Southern Maine’s 10-7 baseball loss to Wheaton while Winthrop graduate David Ricker added two doubles and Gardiner graduate Forrest Chadwick had two singles for the Huskies. … Gardiner grad Hayley Thibeau had an assist in Husson’s 17-1 loss to Castleton in women’s lacrosse. … Skowhegan graduate Becca McCarty allowed one hit in three innings with three strikeouts as Husson defeated Johnson State 18-4 in softball action. … Valley grad Cindy Schultz had a two-run single in the second game as Maine Maritime Academy softball swept Lyndon State, 7-1 and 8-0, in a doubleheader. … Cony grad Dillon Shaw, Messalonskee grads Chris Pelletier and Chris DelGiudice, and Gardiner grad Jake Wright each scored a goal in Husson’s 22-1 men’s lacrosse victory over Green Mountain. Shaw also had two assists.
