BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine questioned Kevin Youkilis’ commitment to the game in his weekly television interview, then apologized to the third baseman on Monday.

During an interview aired Sunday night on WHDH-TV, Valentine said he didn’t think Youkilis was “as physically or emotionally into the game.”

On Monday morning, Valentine said he apologized to Youkilis when the third baseman came into his office and asked for an explanation.

Youkilis told reporters he was confused by the comment. Teammate Dustin Pedroia was upset that Valentine would question Youkilis’ commitment.

Valentine said he was just answering a question about how Youkilis may be feeling during early season struggles.
