FARMINGTON — A Salem Township man shouldn’t have been driving when the Jeep he was driving struck an 18-year-old walking across the street Friday afternoon, police said.

Kenneth Murphy, 20, faces an operating-after-suspension charge, police said Tuesday.

He was driving on Main Street when his 2003 Jeep turned onto Front Street and hit the teenager, who was thrown onto the Jeep’s hood and carried 20 feet before getting tossed to the pavement about 4 p.m., according to Bonnie Pomeroy, a spokeswoman for Farmington police.

The teenager had cuts and scrapes over her entire body and was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, where she was treated and released that evening, Pomeroy said, citing police reports.

Murphy told police he was distracted and didn’t see the girl, who was walking in a crosswalk on Front Street between Gifford’s Ice Cream and McDonald’s, Pomeroy said.

Speed is not a factor listed in police reports, and Murphy had a passenger in his Jeep while traveling in the 25-mph zone, she said. The collision happened where Front Street intersects with Main Street, just across from Hippach Field.

Police records did not indicate why Murphy had his license suspended, Pomeroy said.

Murphy was released on a $2,500 bond from Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington. He also was summoned on a charge of failing to yield to a pedestrian, with his next court appearance scheduled for May 24.
