UNITY — Brian Whitney isn’t interested in racing for points, saying his days of chasing track championships are in the rearview mirror.

“I’ve already tried that before,” he said. “It was almost like a full-time job. Now, we just do it when we can. We really wanted to go to opening day, though.”

Whitney made his appearance count Saturday at Unity Raceway by winning the 52-lap Late Model race on opening day.

“It’s always good to be the first winner,” said Whitney, 35, of Burnham. “We’re week to week. We’re not a full-time points racer so this is good.”

Whitney, who picked up four wins last season, edged defending track champion Jeff Burgess for the victory.

Frank Moulton, who won three consecutive Late Model points titles at Unity from 2008-10, finished third.

“We were running with them,” he said. “We had our ups and downs. It was a good finish.”

Whitney led for about the first 35 laps before the first of four restarts in the final 17 laps pulled him back to Burgess.

The two stayed with each other until the finish, with Whitney having just enough to pull out the victory in the 10-car race.

“It was a good race when the cream of the crop got at the front of the field,” Whitney said. “It was nice to sneak that one away from (Burgess). He’s kind of the king of the race track.”

Added Moulton: “We had a little bad luck in the middle. The car was way too lose. It was tough because no one could get on the bottom to pass. It was a good race for the first day, though.”

Brian Robbins, 37, of Montville, won the Wildcat race on opening day for the second consecutive season.

His nephew, Cody, took a checkered flag in the Flyin’ Fours division.

“It was a good day for Robbins racing,” Brian Robbins said.

Other winners Saturday included the following: Zach Audet (Monsta Mini), Kenny Lord (Challengers), Steve Rackliff (Pro-4’s) and Matt Bourgoine (Nelcar Legends).
