OAKLAND –Ben Weeks scored a career-high seven goals as the Messalonskee boys lacrosse team beat Cony 14-1 in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A game Wednesday.
Weeks scored five goals in the first quarter as the Rams worked hard to keep Messalonskee leading-scorer Nate DelGiudice away from the goal. Cony double-teamed DelGiudice and left Weeks open. The sophomore took advance of the open space in front of the goal where his teammates found him with quick, short passes.
“Nate drew all those defenders to him,” Weeks said. “We’ve been working on in tight shooting and I was open for the shots.”
DelGiudice assisted on two of Weeks’ goals in the early going and finished the game with three goals and three assists. Messalonskee improves to 2-2.
“Nate did a nice job distributing the ball with a lot of pressure on him,” Messalonskee coach Tom Sheridan said. “That was the way we wanted to start the game, finding the open man, and it was good for Ben to get him going offensively.”
Cony (1-2) scrambled on defense to keep pace with Messalonskee’s quickness and short passing game. The Rams generated a number of transition attacks during the early part of the game but the Messalonskee defense and goalkeeper Jacob Smith were able to keep the Rams from scoring.
“I think we are improving,” Cony coach Chad Foye said. “When you play a team like Messalonskee, they force you to play out of your comfort zone. They play at a faster pace and finished well.”
Four different Messalonskee players had an assist on Weeks’ first-quarter flurry. DelGiudice fired a pass from the back to Weeks in front of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead just 36 seconds into the game. Kyle Gleason, Aiden Calkins, Jordan Holmes and DelGiudice added assists on the next four goals for a 5-0 advantage with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
Gleason and DelGiudice finished off the quarter with goals to give Messalonskee a commanding 7-0 lead.
The passing game continued to flourish in the second quarter. Weeks added two more goals, while Luke Vigue and DelGiudice each had one to give the Eagles an 11-0 lead at the half.
Messalonskee had a 30-6 advantage in shots in the first half and finished with a 39-16 edge. Cony goalie Matt Swan had 13 saves, while Smith made 10 for Messalonskee.
Corey Foye, Adam McCown and Carl Smith lead the Messalonskee defense.
Cony’s Derek Elvin scored the Rams only goal from 5-yards out on a pass from Tyler Leet with 4:12 left in the game.
