First came the news that Daisuke Matsuzaka was pitching Saturday at Hadlock Field.

Now comes word that Andy Pettitte will pitch here on Monday. Yankees manager Joe Girardi made the announcement Friday.

It has the makings of a major league home stand in Portland.

Pettitte, a 16-year major league veteran, will pitch for the New York Yankees Double-A minor league team, the Trenton Thunder, in a 6 p.m. game Monday against the Sea Dogs.

Pettitte, 39, is making a comeback after retiring before the 2011 season. He has pitched in three minor league games, including one in Trenton last Wednesday.

Eventually, the Yankees will want Pettitte to pitch in Triple-A, but the Yankees’ Triple-A team in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is not playing on Monday.
